Upcoming High School Open Days 2016
An exciting (and somewhat scary time) is coming up for our
Year 8s (and their parents) – High School!!
If you are in zone for a school, they must take you. It is really helpful to the school if you
enrol by the set date though, as they will talk to us (the Year 8 teachers) to
help with class placements. It is also
helpful for the high schools to know numbers and whether additional staff need
to be employed!
Of course, you can apply for any state school you want to.
If you are out of zone, your child will probably be put in the ballot, and then
a wait list if they miss out on the ballot.
If there are siblings attending, or you are an old boy or girl, your
child will have more priority (not necessarily a guarantee as it depends on
numbers of in zone enrolments). You may
apply for as many schools as you wish, and then choose depending on what your
child gets in to.
Private schools are different as they have no zones. Scholarships may be applied for (generally
for 50% of fees for the 5 years at high school; some schools may offer more
depending on the student) – check out the individual school websites for what
they offer. These probably close reasonably
soon. Scholarships can be for academic,
music, sport or general all round.
Another scholarship which is available is called The Aspire
Scholarship.
The Aspire Scholarship is for students from low income families wanting to attend a New Zealand private secondary school. Closing date for applications is 13 May 2016.
Please type ‘The Aspire Scholarship’ into google and it should be the first one that comes up.

Visiting the high schools’ open days or booking a tour is a
great way to find out if a high school is suitable for your child. I really encourage you to make use of the
open evenings and days offered below.
