This morning we were fortunate enough to have Sean Wainui and Kieran Read visiting Avonhead School promoting the Crusaders and 'Take A Kid to Footy' campaign. We had a full school assembly and had a really interesting Q & A session learning lots about both of these talented players. Following the assembly some selected Avonhead students had a skills session with the two players and learnt some tricks of the trade and techniques to apply to their own rugby games. We managed to grab a photo opportunity for all the Senior HQ, including teachers, with these celebrities while wearing our house colours for today's picnic/games event. Check us out!

Huxster Mountain Biking Relay Event
Last Friday 20 of our Year 7 and 8 students went with Mrs Moore to the annual mountain bike relay event held at McLeans Island. Despite the drizzly start, the day was a huge success. All 20 of the students had opted to take part as a team, so we had 10 teams this year. Everyone gave it their all and showed the parents and I what amazing sportspeople they are. Every student gave 100% effort and it was so exciting hearing about their stories of "passing others" out on the race track. It was also lots of fun watching them tag their partners in the transition area and race off! Here is a movie of images and some go pro footage of the event.....well done to all the stars who feature and a big THANK YOU to the parents who joined us on the day to help make it possible!

Holiday programme at The Mind Lab
Please see the details of Mind Lab's school holiday programme - Mind Lab holiday programme
The Mind Lab offers learning experiences that support the development of the next generation of makers, doers, inventors and creators who will shape the future with new ways of working, thinking and living. From electronics, robotics and animation to programming, film technology and science, The Mind Lab recognises that the world we live in is increasingly influenced by new knowledge and technical advances. The careers our children will enter in the future are very different from the careers we know today.
Equipped with the latest high-tech tools (including 3D printing and robotics equipment) and a team of talented science and technology specialists, The Mind Lab offers a large creative environment where discovery, experimentation and learning by doing is actively encouraged. Students will develop technical skills and key competencies as they learn through collaborative and creative challenges that encompass Science, Technology, Mathematics and Arts.
2016 Open Days
Upcoming High School Open Days 2016
An exciting (and somewhat scary time) is coming up for our
Year 8s (and their parents) – High School!!
If you are in zone for a school, they must take you. It is really helpful to the school if you
enrol by the set date though, as they will talk to us (the Year 8 teachers) to
help with class placements. It is also
helpful for the high schools to know numbers and whether additional staff need
to be employed!
Of course, you can apply for any state school you want to.
If you are out of zone, your child will probably be put in the ballot, and then
a wait list if they miss out on the ballot.
If there are siblings attending, or you are an old boy or girl, your
child will have more priority (not necessarily a guarantee as it depends on
numbers of in zone enrolments). You may
apply for as many schools as you wish, and then choose depending on what your
child gets in to.
Private schools are different as they have no zones. Scholarships may be applied for (generally
for 50% of fees for the 5 years at high school; some schools may offer more
depending on the student) – check out the individual school websites for what
they offer. These probably close reasonably
soon. Scholarships can be for academic,
music, sport or general all round.
Another scholarship which is available is called The Aspire
Scholarship.
The Aspire Scholarship is for students from low income families wanting to attend a New Zealand private secondary school. Closing date for applications is 13 May 2016.
Please type ‘The Aspire Scholarship’ into google and it should be the first one that comes up.
