Term 2 Week 9, 2017

Can you believe there are only two week left until the end of the term?!

This week we began a Matariki art project in anticipation for Matariki on Monday. Here is the link that explains the importance of this holiday and what it represents. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgxifXxMHAw

On Tuesday, the lucky students who were the first 60 to hand in their notice will be attending Riccarton for their presentation of The Lion King.

Also on Tuesday, four of our clever chess masters will be competing at Halswell School for the competitive chess competition. Good luck!

On Wednesday afternoon, we have been given the opportunity to trial a new swim program at King's Swim School. Make sure to return your notices promptly in order to secure your spot. On the day, you will be required to come to school fully prepared for a nice walk and with everything you need to swim.

Final house meeting for the term will be held on Thursday.
Cantamaths prep will begin Friday. If any year 7's are interested in joining an after school Cantamaths practice club every Tuesday please let Miss Jakub know.

Also don't forget to hand in your ski notice to your homeroom teacher!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Term 2 Week 5, 2017

Hi all! I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend!

Last week our senior athletes represented Avonhead school extremely well in both the Canterbury indoor basketball and volleyball tournaments. Avonhead students also competed in cross country zones with many qualifying to centrals! Amazing effort to everyone who went out and competed!

Special thanks to Sophie from Future in Tech who gave an excellent and informative presentation to our senior HQ about the relevance of sustainability. This week we are excited to welcome Angus McIntosh as he is going to be sharing his knowledge on the topic this Wednesday.

Also coming up this week - easttle reading tests throughout the week, national young leaders day on Tuesday and week 3 of winter sport on Friday.

See everyone tomorrow!

Term 1 Inquiry Celebration - Identity!

Special thanks to Jenny Wang in the Senior HQ for making this awesome movie of our celebration on the final day of last term.  We had a great time at our cultural shared lunch (see the photos below) and then our open afternoon in the HQ sharing our projects and displays about our country and identity.

Reminders - Week 1 in the Senior HQ

A few reminders for this week and next for our students and whanau:

1)  Sports top EVERY day as we are taking part in cross country training on Ferrier Park each day.  Don't forget to wash them too please!  A big drink bottle of water would be ideal too.  Cross Country is being held at school on Thursday the 11th of May (Week 2).  We have two competitions this year - the non-competitive cross country event which is 1.5km and the competitive cross country event which is 3km.  Racing starts at 11:30am - please come and join us!

2)  Winter sport trials and practices on Friday for hockey and rugby.  Hopefully you know about the other sports!  Netball teams are announced tomorrow.

3)  HQ2 and HQ3 students need to return their inquiry field trip forms ASAP to the office - we go next Wednesday the 10th of May.  We MUST have 5 parents, friends or family members per class to meet their ratios or we can't go so please offer if you can!  HQ1 and HQ4 your notices will be coming home shortly once your date is confirmed.

4)  Inquiry homework - students should be working on their title pages to ensure these are completed to a high standard this week.

5)  We have just launched our inquiry for this term which is "Sustainability: Be The Change!"  Along with our classroom work and field trip we would like some guest speakers to come in and talk to us about natural resources, human impacts, sustainability, earth problems and conservation.  If you can help us by coming in or by answering questions we could email, or if you know someone who can, please email Mrs Moore on kmoore@avonhead.school.nz.

6) Winter Sport starts Week 3.

Have a great week and weekend everyone!

ANZAC theme week!

This week in the Senior HQ we have been discussing, writing and reading about our ANZAC hero's and the history behind ANZAC day.  We don't want our troops to be forgotten!  As part of our reading 'pick n mix' activities, Mrs Moore has been baking with groups making chocolate dipped ANZAC biscuits.  They are looking amazing!  Taste testing is tomorrow!  Check out the snaps of our students working hard....and if you want the recipe then follow this link  http://www.foodinaminute.co.nz/Recipes/Choc-Dipped-Anzac-Biscuits
